Abstract

This study explores the relationship between the Majos of Fuerteventura, Canary Islands, Spain and the sea using ichthyoarchaeological analyses at Punta del Mallorquín, Llano del Sombrero, and Cueva de Villaverde. These sites provide data on fishing practices among the Majos. Combined with existing research, our results allow us to identify the taxonomic frequency of 27 species, offering an initial insight into the use of marine resources in indigenous times. Parrotfish (Sparisoma cretense) is the most frequent taxon identified. Based on available data, we propose both a specific fishing technique for parrotfish and a model of marine exploration linked to settlement patterns.
